I love the religious poets, especially the hermits of poetry, with thousands of sermons passing down the flame of wisdom.
The two wonders of Cold Mountain and拾得 are unparalleled, surpassing Shenxiu and Lu Huineng in their profoundness.
Forty miles north of Siming lies a place named Wengen, renowned worldwide for its beautiful溪. The master of Wengen溪is unique in appearance and his吟诗坛 rises up abruptly, towering thousands of layers.
Although I have not yet reached his seat of meditation, I can imagine him walking on mossy paths with lofty pine trees. The tower he climbs reaches up to the stars and the moon, and he cultivates vegetables such as yams, glutinous rice, and high-grade grain.
Sometimes he visits the bustling city with his bags of supplies, and even high-ranking officials in the provincial capital are his friends. The old man from Zi Yang Mountain at the age of eighty still writes with fervor, composing verses at night like autumn crickets.
He is despised by the current trends, yet he is willing to confer with them about high-level matters. Despite the hustle and bustle in front of his door, he sits calmly like an iceberg, with a strong sense of character that matches even those far away across thousands of miles.
Wengen溪has a villa with fields of grains and hundreds of pines. I wish I could grow wings and cross the sea to visit him, tapping on his door and ascending his hall. His property is filled with spring flowers such as cherry blossoms, plums, apricots, and herbs; in summer, there are hazelnuts, dates, lotus roots and water chestnuts; in autumn, there are chrysanthemums at the ninth day of the ninth month and early winter plums under frost.
My own poetic skills are far from elegant and worthy of shame compared to his. His poetry is undoubtedly the best, with a profoundness that surpasses even Han Yu's works. I am humbled in front of his poems, like an eagle frozen in the wind before a carved owl.
It has been six years since someone wrote a record about him. I dare not ignore it and hereby accept this responsibility.
