During the decline of the Zhong period in the Tian Dynasty, the social order was disrupted and discipline lost. Among the conflicts between feudal lords, various factions caused disturbances with their troops. Great men of letters in the south were all plotting their own strategies. One such man, Mr. [name], was unyielding and unapproachable.
He was an avid scholar who acquired extraordinary knowledge from a unique book. He understood the profound truth behind the Nine Elixirs, and through his learning, he was blessed with a striking appearance, featuring a purple beard, green hair, and an extraordinary demeanor. He lived like a recluse in seclusion, uninterested in fame and fortune, and willing to abandon them like discarded rags if he were to enter the city of Luò.
He sought the Elixir of Life and was willing to become the Chief Magistrate of Gōulòu, even taking his entire family to cross over to the Southern region of China. On his journey south, he met Deng Guangzhou, and settled on Mount Luófú for the rest of his life. There on the altar, he watched over the flame of medicinal distillation and drank water that contained cinnabar dust from its spring. He could hold his powerful wings like a bird in check, but he still yearned to ride the wind and catch up with the sun.
Although Mr. [name] ascended to immortality through his elixir, his legacy lives on in historical records through his writings. The artist Longmian Jushi truly possesses a marvelous talent. His depiction of Mr. [name] riding a deer with his children and servants clinging to him is so vivid and authentic, seemingly an embodiment of fine brush strokes transforming men into beautiful artworks. His work includes detailed imagery such as medicinal pot and tea磨具(I could not translate this last term accurately as it seems to be a specific tool or device used for tea preparation in Chinese culture),and is followed by a herd of animals—oxen, donkeys, and pigs—symbolizing the artist's meticulous depiction of every detail without exception.
Today, under the snow-covered hall with its white jade-like appearance, I spread out the scroll and found myself filled with joy. It is for this reason that I am writing this poem to continue the legacy left by those who have come before me, and I pay homage to their high aspirations for a thousand years.
